Thompson has spent more spent more than 40 years writing about housing. He began his career as a writer for publications as diverse as The Washington Post, Governing, Practical Homeowner, Venture, and Changing Times. He is the founding editor of business magazine titles such as Residential Architect, Digital Home, ProSales, Big Builder, Developer, and ihousing. He directed the editorial content of Multifamily Executive, Affordable Housing Finance, and Apartment Finance Today magazines.
For 17 years, Thompson served as editorial director of Builder magazine, the flagship magazine for the residential construction industry. In 2010, Builder was named the best business magazine in America by the Association for Business Publication Editors. While at Builder, Thompson built a series of show homes that demonstrated cutting-edge concepts—homes that produced more electricity than they consumed, inner-city homes that provided space to both live and work, modular homes built with recycled materials, and suburban tract homes re-engineered to optimize construction efficiency.
From 2016 to 2020, Thompson toured an interactive exhibit of smart home products to consumer home shows. Each year, he introduced homeowners throughout the country to the latest life-changing products, including personal robots, voice-activated appliances, and construction innovations. He also appeared on television and gave speeches in conjunction with these appearances.
In 2008, Thompson received the Crain Award from American Business Media for a lifetime of achievement in business media. In 2010, Min magazine, a magazine for publication professionals, inducted him into the Hall of Fame. Thompson holds a BA in English from Northwestern University and a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri.
